COLLECTIBLE 2023, Brussels, Belgium

Collectible 2023 1

The 6th edition of COLLECTIBLE was held from 9 to 12 May 2023 at Tour & Taxis, welcoming 103 exhibitors from 27 countries and thousands of visitors included world-class collectors, representatives from major institutions, and renowned journalists, as well as design, architecture and art professionals and aficionados.

For this year’s new location, COLLECTIBLE has called on several scenographers to work in dialogue to elevate the aesthetics of the fair in balance with the wood and glass elements of the Tour & Taxis building. Volfram was in charge of the booth scenography and Paf atelier took over over the entrance scenography of the fair. The set design of the Curated Section was by Heim + Viladrich Office. We devised a programme of Talks addressing various themes around contemporary collectible design.

Collectible 2023 3

Mia Karlova Galerie gives centre stage to functional sculpture, rallying an intriguing roster of international artists whose experimental practices look upon reuse as a conscious act of new existence: sustainability enriched with a deliberate sense of meaning and the desire to provoke new emotions.

Kibardin’s Lolly Chair, serves as a reminder of the global isolation people across the globe experienced during COVID-19. Built out of differently coloured food packaging, the isolated chair manages to serve as a metaphor for the loneliness apparent to all during the pandemic. Karlova asserts, “I am excited to present this new series of works by Vadim which at once ignite feelings of surprise, of wonder, of uncertainty coupled with distinct hope and positivity, creating a firm balance for existence. Vadim has delved into a conscious and responsible approach to consumption and offers his contribution towards achieving a circular economy out of cardboard boxes.”

Collectible 2023 5

Vadim Kibardin is a Prague-based artist and industrial designer who presented Lost Sculptures and Lolly Chair at Collectible 2023. While the former is built using waste paper and cardboard, the latter is constructed using discarded food packaging. Kibardin was inspired to build Lost Sculptures after a visit to the flea market, where he witnessed his contemporaries scouring for vintage coins and old objects with a sense of wonder. In an attempt to imbue new life into old and discarded objects, the designer purchased a vintage lamp, covered it in layers of colourful paper and cards and added the finishing touch with the integration of a clock, hence giving it function, besides building a sculptural piece.
